General Appearance

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a versatile hunter, an all-purpose gun dog capable of high performance in the field or in water. The overall picture created in the observer's eye, is that of an aristocratic, noble, well-balanced, symmetrical animal, with conformation indicating power, endurance and agility and a look of intelligence and animation. Neither to small or conspicuously large. It gives the impression of medium size, with a short back standing over plenty of ground. Tall leggy dogs, or dogs which are ponderous or unbalanced should be definitely rejected. The first impression is that of keeness, which denotes full enthusiasm for work without indication of nervous or flighty character.

Selecting Your G.S.P

Buying a puppy on impulse may only cause heartbreak later on, ditto on buying a puppy because it's "cheap", it makes better sense to put some real thought into your canine investment, read all that you can about your breed of choice, go to a dog show, visit more than one kennel, reputable breeders will be willing to answer any questions you might have. Research the pedigree of the puppy your interested in, this is the best way to determine how the pup in question will turn out, google or any other search engine can assist you in this, don't just take the seller's word for it, check it out for yourself! All this may seem excessive but spending money only to spend more money on a better dog is worse, this dog will live about 12 years take your time and get the right one. Make sure
the pedigree is full of proven hunters & titled dogs.
Request to see both the dam and sire, paying close attention to their temperaments. The parents should be easily handled by their owner, attentive and eager to please them. Field dogs are not always as willing to retrieve from water, however there's been many a great field dog. Makeing sure there are versatile "DUAL QUALITY" dogs on the pedigree will only increase your odds of getting a great multi talented hound that
you'll be proud to own.
